Laszlo's Linguistic Adventures: Matt Berry's Comedic Missteps in What We Do in the Shadows
Aug-12-2024
The charm of the series What We Do in the Shadows is undoubtedly highlighted by Matt Berry's portrayal of the vampire Laszlo Cravensworth. The actor has infused the character with his distinctive vocal style, contributing to some of the most memorable moments from the show. However, it appears that not all of his iconic lines are delivered with full awareness of their intent.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Berry revealed that much of his standout dialogue stems from his efforts to maneuver through the myriad references to American pop culture that are woven into the script. He noted, "In this past season, there were so many American pop culture references, and I haven't got a clue what hardly any of them are. You just kind of navigate those and make them work for your own language and speech pattern. But you know, it was a show that was created by two Kiwis from New Zealand, and their sense of humor is kind of similar to our [British] sense of humor."
Berry further added that the mispronunciations he often makes are unintentional, arising from his unfamiliarity with a lot of the American references, particularly in sports. He expressed his confusion with various sporting terminologies, remarking that he had little understanding of baseball or any related games. As a result, he often improvises his own interpretations, lending his unique flair to the language and dynamics of the show.
This revelation suggests that viewers can anticipate yet another season filled with hilariously mispronounced phrases and expressions, enhancing the comedic appeal that Berry has brought to his role.
