Zatanna, the captivating Mistress of Magic from DC, is making her return in an exciting new comic illustrated and written by the talented Jamal Campbell, known for his work on Superman and Far Sector. Scheduled for release in February, this six-issue limited series is embedded within the main DC universe. It features the iconic sorceress as she embarks on a journey to reclaim her life, only to have her plans disrupted by a menacing new foe called The Lady White. In his take on the series, Campbell expressed his deep admiration for the character and his goal to convey what makes Zatanna truly enchanting through his illustrations and storytelling.
The premiere issue will present a primary cover by Campbell alongside a variety of alternative covers from notable artists, including Chris Bachalo, Jaime Mendoza, Sozomaika, David Talaski, and Saowee. Campbell also contributes an additional variant cover. The essence of Zatanna's performances combines wonder, intrigue, playful mischief, and her signature fishnet attire. Campbell emphasized the importance of her return to the stage, explaining that her latest adventure takes her on a journey filled with cursed artifacts, concealed secrets, and numerous encounters with peril.
Zatanna will need all her skills and magical prowess to navigate through these challenges and emerge unscathed. A sneak peek at some of Campbell's artwork from the debut issue has been released, along with a character introduction for this thrilling new series. This marks the first significant Zatanna comic connected to the main DC universe in many years; the previous title concluded back in 2011. Zatanna has remained a relevant figure within the DC landscape, frequently appearing in various events and collaborations.
She co-starred in titles like 2014's Black Canary and Zatanna while headlining 2017's Mystik U. Earlier this year, she was featured in the limited series Zatanna: Bring Down the House, penned by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Javier Rodríguez, which was part of the DC Black Label and not linked to the main continuity. Zatanna #1 is set for release by DC on February 19, 2025. Zatanna has played a key role within some of the most esteemed line-ups of the Justice League.
